cupping

Cupping

Therapeutic cupping is an ancient alternative medicine technique, which has recently made a comeback in the sports medicine world, especially during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Cupping helps flush old, stagnant blood from old injuries, which may be preventing complete recovery. When the therapy is finished, the cups are taken off and the muscle is irrigated with new, healthy blood full of nutrients needed for the injured area to recover. This process helps heal deep scar tissue from old injuries or surgeries, muscle spasms and overuse injuries.

What To Expect

During your treatment session, the athletic trainer will begin by placing the cup on your skin and attaching a suction pump to the cup, thereby creating a vacuum. It may be moved around in a massaging motion or left in place for a few minutes before being removed. You may feel mild pressure during the session and have visible red marks for a few days following the treatment. Most people, however, report little to no discomfort during the session and experience results immediately after.

Benefits

This “vacuum” effect will cause nutrient-rich blood to pool into the area under the cup. The nutrient-rich blood promotes healing and increases range of motion.

Do I Need This?

If you are experiencing any type of tightness, soreness, fatigue or pain in a muscle area, cupping could be very beneficial. This treatment can also break up scar tissue that may be causing pain.

marc pro

Marc Pro

The Marc Pro is an electronic device that stimulates the muscles to improve or facilitate muscle recovery. Marc, or Muscle Activated Recovery Cascade, is technology designed to create unique, strong, yet completely non-fatiguing, muscle contractions that set off a cascading series of physiologic events. When used during down-time, or when working out is not an option, this is a great alternative and helps prevent injuries.

What To Expect

The recovery specialist will place electrode pads around the specific muscle that is fatigued. These pads are specific to the athlete and will not be used on anyone else. The pads will be attached to leads on the Marc Pro. The setting should be strong, but comfortable, and will create a small contraction in the muscle.

Benefits

The process of contracting the muscles dilates blood vessels to increase blood flow and deliver more oxygenated nutrients to the specific area being treated. The lymphatic system is also engaged and benefits from this muscle activity. By pushing deoxygenated blood away from the fatigued area, the recovery of the muscle is greatly accelerated.

Do I Need This?

Because the Marc Pro is strictly a recovery tool it can be used on any muscle group that is feeling sore or tired.

game ready

Game Ready

Many professional athletes and medical professionals choose Game Ready as a part of the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) regimen due to how it combines adjustable coldness and intermittent compression. Game Ready is considered more therapeutic than the RICE technique, but both are used to treat acute and chronic injuries, and assist in orthopedic post-operative rehabilitation. From your head to your toes, Game Ready can help in the treatment and healing process of a variety of musculoskeletal injuries, as well as post-operative recovery.

What To Expect

Game Ready will be filled with ice and water, and attached to a hose with a sleeve. This sleeve will be wrapped around the affected body part or joint. The pressure can be set at low, medium or high based upon comfort level. When the Game Ready is turned on, the cold water will circulate through the sleeve as it compresses.

Benefits

Game Ready can decrease swelling and inflammation in a joint or muscle. Inflammation can lead to a decrease in range of motion and severe pain. The active compression mimics natural muscle contractions and stimulates healing for long-lasting results.

Do I Need This?

If you’ve suffered a soft tissue injury or have joint pain, Game Ready is right for you. Its advanced technology can aid in your rehabilitation and get you back in action as quickly as possible.

laser

Laser

Sports Recovery Annex offers laser therapy treatments on a variety of areas. Laser therapy reduces muscle inflammation without side effects or pain. This technology can increase stamina, quicken recovery time, increase blood supply to muscles, and prevent chronic injuries. Laser therapy has a proven track record of being one of the most effective and safest treatments.

What To Expect

The treatment session will be about 10 minutes long, depending on the area and injury being treated. Protective glasses must be worn by both the athlete and the professional performing the treatment.

Benefits

Laser therapy works at a cellular level to provide accelerated pain relief, increased joint flexibility and shortened healing times.

Do I Need This?

Laser therapy can be used to treat inflammation, and repair muscle, tendons and bone.

corrective exercise

Corrective Exercises

One of our athletic trainers will personally design and guide you through a customized exercise program to fit your specific needs. Corrective exercises target faulty movements that can cause pain or injury, and with proper execution, will reduce pain. These exercises are also a way to control and find relief from pain without medication. Furthermore, correction of incorrect movement patterns prevents future injuries.

What To Expect

The athletic trainer will take you through a series of functional movement screenings to determine what movements need to be corrected. Our athletic trainers will then work with you to explain each exercise and how to properly execute it.

Benefits

Corrective exercises prevent injuries and pain, and increase your strength and stability. They are an essential factor in injury prevention, sports conditioning and injury rehabilitation.

Do I Need This?

Specific exercises can assist you with muscular imbalances, faulty neuromuscular coordination, inadequate ligament or tendon strength, decreased flexibility and issues related to body composition.

gratson

Graston Technique

Graston Technique® is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that effectively breaks down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas that are exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

What To Expect

Based on the area being treated, the athletic trainer will select the Graston tools that will be most effective. It is common to experience minor discomfort during the procedure and some bruising afterwards. This is a normal response and part of the healing process.

Benefits

Graston tools can help smooth out and alleviate any fascial restrictions or adhesions in the muscle. They are more effective than massage at getting to the deep areas and promoting healing. This technique is especially beneficial on scar tissue, and can turn an injury into healthy, functioning tissue.

Do I Need This?

If you are experiencing limited range of motion, pain or are restricted in your physical activity, then the Graston Technique could be a very beneficial treatment for you.

norma tec

NormaTec

The NormaTec Pulse Recovery System is a compression device that is designed to assist with recovery and rehabilitation in the arms, hips and legs. Created with athletes in mind, this technology helps you recover faster between training sessions and after performance. NormaTec flushes out harmful metabolites and allows you to recover in a comfortable setting. By strengthening the body from the inside out, with the help of NormaTec, you can reach your full athletic potential.

What To Expect

Your recovery specialist will select the best NormaTec accessory to use (legs, hips, or arms). There will be an appropriate sleeve for each body part that is attached to a hose. The specialist will help you with the sleeves, then turn the machine on for a 30-minute session. Pulsing action encourages fluids to move out of the muscles after a workout. The sleeve will compress and release in each cell as they fill with air. This pulsing keeps fluids from being forced in the wrong direction. The device releases the pressure in each cell at exactly the right moment to give your muscles maximum rest and recovery time.

Benefits

Excess fluid and lactic acid will be flushed out of the muscle, leaving your legs, arms or hips feeling lighter and less sore. Using NormaTec regularly can increase range of motion and decrease inflammation and soreness.

Do I Need This?

Every active person can benefit from NormaTec. Using this system regularly will enhance your training, keep you from feeling fatigued, and make you a stronger athlete.

muscle activation technique

Muscle Activation Technique

Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) is a systematic approach for evaluating and correcting muscular imbalances that contribute to injury. These imbalances also impede recovery and compromise performance. This method of evaluation and strategic stretching offers a way to bring balance back to your muscles.

What To Expect

The athletic trainer will check your range of motion and note any imbalances or bilateral differences. He or she will then guide you in performing a series of specific stretches to help you achieve full range of motion and decrease muscle tightness.

Benefits

This unique process for evaluating and treating an individual’s level of ability to produce efficient muscle contraction can greatly improve physical performance.

Do I Need This?

MAT is suitable for all types of athletes, from professional players to casual competitors. If you are experiencing a difference in muscle flexibility, muscular imbalances or joint range of motion bilaterally, MAT may be the treatment you need.
